Melbourne and surrounding towns have been swamped with a flesh eating ulcer bacteria and experts believe mosquitoes are the key. The Buruli  Ulcer has reached record levels in Victoria with 45 cases reported this year alone. The number of cases has spiked from 32 cases in 2010 to 106 in 2015. The mosquito transmits the ulcer causing bacteria through its’ bite leaving the bacteria behind to do its’ nefarious work. One Jan Smith was misdiagnosed and the bacteria ate through her flesh down to the bone on her leg. After eventually being properly diagnosed and put on the correct dosage of antibiotics Jan has fully recovered from flesh eating ulcer but it is likely she will require plastic surgery to repair the damage to her leg.

This serves as a timely reminder for we Queenslanders who enjoy this tropical climate of ours and need to be very mosquito aware. As with most things, the best cure is prevention so anything we can do to prevent mosquito bites is ideal as it will also inherently reduce the chance of contracting one of many mosquito spread diseases like Zika, Bruruli Ulcer, Dengue Fever and Ross River Fever (just to name a few!). Some simple DIY things you can do is remove places were mosquitoes dwell and breed. Mozzies love moisture and love being close to human dwellings as it means not having to travel very far for a blood meal. Removing things from around the yard like buckets, palm fronds, tarpaulins or anything else that will hold shallow pools of water when it rains. Removing these items will deny a mosquito (or many) a place to breed and live, therefore vastly reducing the number of mozzies invading your Saturday afternoon BBQ. Mosquitoes aren’t distance flyers and will linger in the same area, especially if there is plenty of food (humans) and room to grow the brood.

Removing harborages are just the first step, if you live in low lying areas  close to large bodies of water like Wakerley, Ransome, Boondall, Birkdale or Gumdale; or are unable to stem the flow of mosquitoes, we recommend a Mosquito Treatment. This treatment will give you relief from being eaten alive at night and protect your friends and family from a potentially harmful mosquito bite. Our mosquito treatment will vastly reduce the number of mosquitoes in your yard and reduce the risk of neighboring mosquitoes from biting you and your family. During the mosquito control treatment our qualified technician uses a “fogger” to mist the chemical under the eaves of your home and throughout the foliage of your surrounding gardens and yard to wipe out the breeding adults and juvenile mosquitoes in these areas to break the breeding cycle. The treatment also lingers on the surfaces it’s applied to so should neighboring mosquitoes come to your home looking for a meal they will land on the surrounding foliage and pick up the chemical and die before they have the chance to bite of you or your family.
