This summer we have seen a large volume of calls from home owners looking for some relief from the mosquitoes and midges that descend around dusk and we have good and bad news on that front. Yes, we can help with the mosquitoes but there might be limited effect on the midges, here’s why:
Our treatment involves misting the treatment throughout surrounding gardens, outdoor entertainment areas, under eaves, around pool areas and tennis courts. This treatment creates a “mozzie free living zone”. The treatment works in two ways, first of all, the initial treatment wipes out the breeding adults and developing larvae to break the breeding cycle. The treatment also has a residual effect which means when mozzies or midges land on the treated areas (ie. under eaves, foliage in gardens or other surfaces) they will die. Mosquitoes and midges are not powerful flyers and need to land frequently, the treatment takes advantage of this, killing the mosquitoes before they can harass you and your family on the patio.
Our mosquito treatment is extremely effective against mosquitoes, flies and ticks. It has a limited effect on midges as we cannot reach midge breeding sites, so we are relying on the residual part of the treatment to do most of the work against midges. Midges breed and lay their eggs in sand, soil or mud where the midge pupa will stay until conditions are right before they emerge from the breeding site. This is usually after heavy rain or in the scenario where they are in sand, after a high tide. This is why midges are particularly bad around new or full moons or after. As our treatment cannot penetrate mud or wet sand, nor are we allowed to treat these areas so we can only use the residual nature of the treatment against them.
If you live near Moreton Bay, the Brisbane river, any wetland or low lying area like Wynnum North, Murrarie, Hemmant, Bulimba, Hawethorn or Ransome you may find the midges and mosquitoes to be quite bad at the moment with the recent storms and rain that has been around the mosquitoes and midges will be on the move.
One tip our senior technician has to offer is when you are enjoying your deck or patio, set up a fan to blow outwards from you patio, as midges aren’t Strong flyers this gust of air will make it difficult for them to reach you.
